31 juveniles in Malappuram undergo day-long correctional training programme

KOZHIKODE: In a unique event, 31 juvenile traffic offenders in Malappuram district underwent a one-day compulsory corrective traffic training on Saturday as recommended by the district juvenile board. It was conducted to check the spike in juvenile traffic offences in the district as slapping of fine was not serving the purpose.
The district child protection unit held the programme at the Institute of Driving Training and Research (IDTR) at Kandanakam, Edappal.
“The training was given for correction. Slapping of fine alone will not serve the purpose among adolescents,” said Mr Sameer Machingal, district child protection officer (DCPO).
The juvenile offences were committed between 2012 and 2015 and cases were registered across 18 police stations. Of this, the majority were registered by Parappanangady police—10.
A sum of Rs 55,550 has been collected from the offenders as fine. The juveniles include a 13-year- old who drove a car.
Adults are punishable with jail term up to seven months for rash driving, exhibition of false lights, overload etc besides fine. Malappuram tops in the state in juvenile traffic offences.
Already 174 cases of total offences are before the JJ board of which a major chunk is that of traffic offence.
As that was the case, the social justice department sought the opinion of district child protection unit which in turn recommended giving thrust on correction.
Malappuram chief judicial magistrate and JJ board Principal magistrate R.T Prakash inaugurated the training.
