26 eateries sealed in Kerala-wide crackdown
Squads inspect 1,015 outlets in district and seal two
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As many as 26 eateries were sealed as part of a special joint drive launched by the Commissionerate of Food Safety, Directorate of Health Services and local bodies across the state on Saturday in the wake of the festival season.
Around 1231 food business operators were slapped with improvement notices for violations of food safety standards and for not maintaining hygiene and Rs 1.13 lakhs was collected as a fine.
The drive was launched as part of the Safe Kerala initiative – which aims at controlling communicable diseases.
In Thiruvananthapuram, the special squads inspected around 1015 eateries and sealed two eateries for severe violations.
Rural district medical office T A Raju said that around 198 notices were served during the drive. Unhygienic kitchen, work area, unsafe drinking water, stale food, food handlers with contagious diseases were some of the common violations found at eateries. Around 900 teams took part in the statewide inspection.
“We will continue this drive in the coming days. Combined drives are more effective,” said Mr Raju, who is also the nodal officer of the Safe Kerala initiative.
The squads inspected around 1,07,77 eateries across the state on Saturday. Notices were issued to eateries which were found to have mosquito breeding grounds, leaking drainages and unscientific waste management. Around 441 eateries were functioning without proper licences.
