The council decided to regularise the violation and collect tax on the structure

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The city corporation council that met here on Friday has decided to sign the agreement with SIDCO for implementing the Rs 152.92-crores LED project to light up all the 100 wards.

There were widespread opposition protests alleging that SIDCO is not technically qualified for implementing the project.

The council turned stormy when the agenda came up for discussion. Mayor K. Chandrika passed the agenda without putting it to vote.

The unilateral decision of the ruling front to award the contract to SIDCO has irked the United Democratic Front (UDF), which has decided to challenge it in the High Court.

UDF councillor Maheswaran Nair alleged widespread corruption in the deal.

As many as 13 companies, including Keltron and SIDCO, had submitted the expression of interest invited by the corporation. The technical committee recommended SIDCO.

The council had also decided to regularise the unauthorised construction undertaken by KIMS, a bridge connecting two of its buildings over a public road illegally.

The council decided to regularise the violation and collect tax on the structure.

The council session turned violent when Mr Nair came up with an allegation that the dress the civic body gifted to the councillors came from a leading textile shop for free.
