DRI seizes narcotics from saree consignment

Chennai: Sleuths from the directorate of revenue intelligence on Thursday seized 24.5 kg of the party drug Methaqualone valued Rs 3.74 crore from a consignment of sarees ready to be loaded into a Malaysian airline’s cargo flight bound for Kuala Lumpur from Chennai.
According to DRI sources, the same cargo was supposed to be shipped from Bengaluru on Wednesday. But due to cancellation of the flight, the cargo was transferred to Chennai and the 12 carton boxes containing 424 sarees were booked for shipping to Kuala Lumpur.
While checking, DRI sleuths found narcotics in the consignment, initially cleared by Bengaluru customs. "Methaqualone powder was filled in the side wall of all the carton boxes," DRI sources said. Other investigation is on the find out the origin of the consignment.
