Doctor who turned around taluk hospital transferred

The court had asked that the transfer be revised and granted three months to take a decision on it

KOLLAM: A doctor who was instrumental in converting a neglected taluk hospital into a well-equipped multi-speciality hospital was shunted out.

Dr Shahirsha, the Superintendent of Punalur Taluk hospital, was transferred overnight to the Thiruvananthapuram general hospital. It is alleged that the health minister directly interfered to transfer the doctor under the influence of a local Congress leader.

Dr. Shahirsha who had an inter-caste marriage, approached the court earlier when the authorities transferred his wife Dr S. Sindi to Kollam district hospital on July 25.

As per the inter-caste marriage act, both the husband and the wife should be given appointments in the same station. “I had approached the administrative tribunal to procure a stay order on her transfer based on the inter-caste marriage act.

The court had asked that the transfer be revised and granted three months to take a decision on it. My transfer is a clear case of contempt of court as her case is subjudice. I will go for a legal battle,” Dr. Shahirsha told DC.

The transfer order was issued on Thursday night and a doctor from Palakkad rushed to take charge at the hospital on Friday morning. “The health minister directly made the move to transfer me,” he said.

Alleging corruption in the transfer order, Dr. Shahirsha said the order contained his name alone though he had not completed his tenure. “I have been targeted,” he alleged. The doctor had earlier asked permission to continue for one more year with the hospital to complete the projects he had undertaken. His wife is also working with him at the Punalur taluk hospital as a gynaecologist. The hospital staff on Thursday gave their Superintendent a teary farewell.
