Telangana gives Rs 15 lakh as Smita Sabharwal’s court fee

The legal expenses of Rs 15 lakh will have to be refunded to ts if the IAS officer wins the case

Hyderabad: The Telangana government on Thursday sanctioned Rs 15 lakh to IAS officer Smita Sabharwal towards legal expenses to file a civil suit amounting to Rs 10 crore against Outlook magazine for posting an article and a cartoon showing her in poor light, in its edition dated July 6, 2015.

Ms Sabharwal, who is the additional secretary to Chief Minister, had written to the government on July 29 seeking legal expenses to enable her to initiate legal proceedings against the magazine.

She sought Rs 9.75 lakh towards court fee for civil suit and another Rs 5 lakh to meet other legal expenses.

The IAS Officers Association had also represented to the government to extend legal assistance to Ms Sabharwal to fight the case against the magazine.

The state government on Thursday sanctioned the money to her on condition that in case she got compensation from the court, this amount has to be refunded.
