Muslim League to meet today to discuss High Court order
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The high power committee of Muslim League will meet at Panakkad on Friday to discuss HC division bench refusal to stay the single bench order cancelling bifurcation of corporation and panchayat wards even as party general secretary K P A Majeed suspected the intentions of State Election Commissioner.
The meeting will finalise party’s stand on the forthcoming local bodies’ poll. All league ministers have been directed to reach Panakkad for the crucial meeting on Friday.
Earlier, Majeed said that one could not be faulted if the Election Commissioner’s past political history was suspected. Formerly he was CPM panchayat member and his change of mind was doubtful, the league leader alleged and added that his party was for elections on time.
The league ministers also held an emergency meeting in Thiruvananthpauram in the wake of HC verdict.
After the meeting, Industry Minister P K Kunhalikutty told media persons that party leaders would hold discussions with the government on August 24. He said a final decision on the local bodies’ poll was likely to be taken on that day.
Apart from Kunhalikutty, panchayat minister M K Muneer and municipal affairs minister Manjalamkuzhy Ali took part in the meeting.
Muneer said the High Court verdict could not be interpreted as total rejection of the government stand.
The government will take a decision after holding discussions with State Election Commission though at the moment there was some confusion about holding elections in a time bound manner.
Meanwhile, Opposition Leader V S Achuthanandan said that HC verdict was a big blow to the government's move to sabotage the local bodies’ poll.
Chief Minister Oommen Chandy who resorted to this misadventure owing to pressure from League is squarely responsible for the current mess.
The government should stop adopting crooked ways to delay the polls and cooperate with the State Election Commission to complete the process within the stipulated time.
CPI state secretary Kanam Rajendran slammed the government for adopting devious ways to delay the elections.
