Ernakulam Range inspector general moots GPS for private buses

He also has suggested to provide radio-frequency identification (RFID) tracking system for buses

Kochi: Ernakulam Range inspector general (IG) of police has suggested installation of advanced tracking system for private buses in Kochi so as to control the private buses notorious for road kills.

IG M. R. Ajith Kumar has recommended installation of global positioning system (GPS) and cameras inside every bus plying in the city.

According to him, the government has entrusted C-DAC with the development of a software for the entire state to digitise the timing of buses.

The digitised timing would help in developing an analysis of the existing timings of the vehicles and more rationalized timing system, thus preventing issues between private buses.

He also has suggested to provide radio-frequency identification (RFID) tracking system for buses.

As per a latest report submitted before Justice Alexander Thomas on an earlier order the IG has submitted that an RFID tag with a unique serial number would be programmed in the software and attached to the windshield of each bus.

RFID reader with GPRS interface would be installed at the checkpoint. One reader would be assigned for the bus moving one direction and another for the buses coming in opposite direction.

When a bus fixed with the tag passes through the punching station, the reader will automatically read the serial number of the tag. This number would be sent to the remote server, thus helping in verifying the data. All reports would be available at the RTO office.

He submitted that the state had asked the police to register FIRs compulsorily whenever an issue occurs between private buses. Instead of releasing the vehicles at the police station, the buses would be submitted before judicial authorities for disposal.

Police would also request to cancel the permits initially for three months immediately and for permanently in deserving cases.

Police also submitted that after the court order on June 26 and till July 15, the police had registered 73 suo motu cases and 622 petty cases.
