BBMP polls: Whitefield raps to its civic woes

Members of Whitefield Rising are leaving no stone unturned to generate awareness

Bengaluru: Ahead of elections, members of Whitefield Rising are leaving no stone unturned to generate awareness of the innumerable civic woes that the residents here have been facing.

Now a group of techies from the group have come up with a rap song of their own that narrates the tale of Whitefield and its civic issues. The song is a confluence of rap and Carnatic music in English and Kannada that presents issues facing Whitefield like traffic, bad roads and ambulances being stuck amidst traffic jams.

Aswin Subramanian, who wrote the lyrics of the song along with Rajshekharan Gokul, has been an active member of Whitefield Rising. Aswin says, “Since we have started a Black Friday campaign in Whitefield, we thought a rap song would be a good way to give greater momentum to the campaign. Our main aim is to highlight through the rap song the innumerable issues that Whitefield has been facing for a long time. We are hoping it will create the much-needed awareness among various sections of people.” The project was conceptualized in the first week of the Black Friday campaign and before the third week, the recording of the song is ready.

Currently, the shooting of the video is going on. Interestingly, the group is inviting small video clips taken from phones that will be included in the song. Aswin adds, “We are making a video that shows the main character traveling amidst the traffic of Whitefield and how earlier it used to take just 30-40 minutes for people to travel. We have asked people to send videos that highlight the issue so that we can incorporate them in the song.”

The rap is sung by Rajshekharan Gokul, Carnatic by Prasanth and the female version is sung by a girl named Durga studying in the 11th standard. The song is now available on soundcloud and it will shortly be put up on youtube. There seem to be a lot of activities by the Whitefield Rising group. They have also been clicking pictures of broken dividers, bad roads and neglected lakes and putting them up on various social media platforms to create awareness.
