Armed robbers thrive in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh
Hyderabad: In March last year, armed men robbed a trader’s house in Fatehpur village in Shankarpally.
A gang of masked men had attacked them with iron rods, knives etc. before looting their money and gold. Ranga Reddy police, who investigated the case, concluded that the gang was from another state.
Andhra Pradesh witnessed more than 500 armed robberies and dacoities last year, while there were more than 350 such offences in Telangana. As per data from the National Crime Records Bureau, around Rs 7 crore worth of property and cash was robbed from each state from banks, commercial establishments and residences in the last year.
Most of the “visiting gangs”, who arrive here from central and northern parts of India, are armed with pistols and revolvers.
As per NCRB data, robbers targeted houses in Telangana, while in AP, vehicles were targeted. Unlike in Telangana, robbers also targeted 49 religious places.
“In Hyderabad and other cities in the state, a considerable number of thefts and robberies were committed by gangs from Karnataka, Maharashtra, Bihar and other northern states. They come here for a few days, commit offences and flee to their native places,” a senior CID official said.
The North Indian gangs usually commit the robberies with stolen bikes. The bikes are abandoned after the offence, leaving the police with few clues. When the gangs flee to other states, the cops are usually led on a wild goose chase.
