According to Greek media, Tsipras is set to call a snap election for 20 September

Athens: Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will submit his resignation to the country's president later Thursday to clear the way for early elections on September 20, a government official said.

Tspiras, elected in January, is expected to make a televised state address on Thursday evening. He is set to submit his resignation to the president to clear the way for the elections, the media reports said.

According to Greek media, Tsipras is set to call a snap election for 20 September.

Energy and Environment Minister Panos Skourletis said on state TV: "The certainty is that the need for elections has arisen."

Tsipras effectively lost his parliamentary majority after a rebellion by hardliners in his Syriza party who oppose a bailout agreement struck with international lenders.
