Visakhapatnam: A galaxy of Arjuna awardees in athletics including Milkha Singh, P.T. Usha, Anju Bobby George will attend the one of the major sporting events — Shriram Properties National Inter-District Junior Athletics Meet — to be held at Visakhpatnam from September 5 to 7.
About 3,600 athletes in the under-14 and under-16 categories from 300 districts across the country will compete in 30 disciplines during the three-day event that will be held at the Visakhapatnam Port Trust’s Diamond Jubilee Outdoor Stadium.
This would be the first time that South India is hosting India’s biggest national championship for grassroot athletes. NID-JAM is an initiative of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI).
Speaking to newsmen here on Wednesday, HRD minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao said Union sports minister Sarbananda Sonowal was likely to inaugurate the event and the CM would attend either the inaugural or the concluding day ceremonies.
