AIADMK insists on EVKS Elangovan apology

Protests against EVKS continue statewide
Chennai: The ruling AIADMK is demanding an apology from TNCC president E.V.K.S. Elangovan for his remarks on the recent meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa. A major article in the party organ Namadhu MGR on Wednesday condemned Elango-van, chiding him for the remarks made by him which were ‘unethical’ and warned him to stop making such derogatory remarks.
The BJP state leadership also swung into direct action on the issue of Elangovan's comments on the Prime Minister and the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister saying they would also be filing a defamation suit against Elangovan.
Wednesday saw statewide demonstrations against the TNCC president by the AIADMK cadres who took to ‘effigy’ burning and stone pelting. Congress cadres also retorted in similar demonstrations. More than 10 TNCC functionaries were arrested by the Nandambakkam police for burning effigies of CM J. Jayalalithaa on Tuesday night.
Two AIADMK members climbed a mobile tower in Chennai near Elangovan’s residence at Nandambakkam to register their protest.
The Tirunelveli mayor Bhuvaneshwari even threatened to commit suicide by climbing on to the wall of the Tamirabharani causeway while demanding the arrest of the state Congress chief.
Elangovan maintains his stand, says he won’t apologise
TNCC president E. V. K. S. Elangovan on Wednesday maintained that he has done nothing wrong and maintained that there was no need to seek apology, as his comments were not personal, but misunderstood by the AIADMK.
Addressing a packed press conference at Sathyamurthi Bhavan, the Congress headquarters, Elangovan said his intention was not to humiliate any one. “What can I do ? They (AIADMK) have misunderstood what I have said,” he asked the reporters.
“It has taken more than three days for the AIAD MK to interpret that I have demeaned Jayalalithaa. This in an act to divert the issue of total prohibition and I am not relenting”, he said. I thank all the Opposition leaders including Karunanidhi, Vaiko, Vijayakanth and Thirumavalavan for supporting the total prohibition and those who had issued statements supporting my stand”, he said.
There have been adverse remarks by the AIADMK high command against Congress president Sonia Gandhi, but the AIADMK is unable to digest when a common remark is made against their party chief. I reiterate that I have not spoken any thing personal about the leaders I only said that there was an illicit affair between the parties (BJP and the AIAD MK), what is wrong in this, Elangovan reiterated. The Congress leader also condemned the arrest of the his party workers by police, but there is no action against the ruling party members despite unleashing violence, he alleged.
Meanwhile a melee a broke out between a Jaya TV reporter and the Congress president Elangovan when both started exchanging heated arguments. To this Elangovan alleged that it was a planned event to disrupt the press briefing called by him. Sensing trouble, journalists and a few Congressmen rescued the correspondent from Elangovan’s supporters.
