15 dogs shot dead by gypsies in Chennai

Chennai: In a gruesome attack near Injambakkam on Wednesday, 15 dogs were shot dead by gypsies after being hired to do so by panchayat president Janikaraman. R. Mohan’s pet dog was also shot dead just five feet away from him while he was exercising on the beach and has claimed that Janikaraman who was just 50 feet away from him, apparently asking the gypsies to kill all the dogs on the beach.
Speaking to DC, Mohan said they had raised their dog as one of their own family members and were devastated by its death in such a ghastly manner. When he questioned Janikaraman, Mohan said he was dismissed without a second thought by the panchayat president.
A member of Blue Cross, Dawn Williams was called to the spot and she found four more dead dogs on Kovalam beach. According to Williams, the locals informed her that Mohammed Ali, personal assistant to Janikaraman, threw 15 dogs into the sea to conceal the carcasses but they were washed ashore.
An FIR has been filed against the panyachat president, his PA and gypsy Selvam under the Arms Act and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. The gun has been handed over to the Kelambakkam station and the carcasses of five dogs have been sent to Madras Veterinary College and Hospital for postmortem.
