Miss Asia winner Kanika Kapur knew that she was destined to win right from the start

As the Manappuram Miss Asia crown was placed on the pretty head of 20-year-old Kanika Kapur amid a shower of confetti, there was none of the usual “wide-eyed surprise” or “hand on the mouth” theatrics. Kanika was calm and composed as if she was expecting to win. Concurring, Kanika says, “In my head I was already wearing an invisible crown right from the beginning. If you do not believe in yourself how can you hope to convince others?”
Perhaps her confidence and composure stems from the fact that she, though only 20, has made winning a habit. Kanika has won all the pageants that she has been a part of, from the first one she participated on a whim two years back. There is no doubt that this crown is the most prestigious of her wins considering that Delhi-based Kanika was pitted against seasoned professionals from other Asian countries.
The win though, is not her only take away from the contest, she has learnt a lot. She explains, “This event was very special because we had girls from different nationalities staying under one roof. I had Miss Bhutan as my room-mate and I taught her my language and she taught me hers. Even though we were all vying for the crown, there was no animosity; instead each contestant helped the other correct their flaws. Yesterday morning as we said our goodbyes most of us were in tears. Though we are all from different places and have different cultures, we forged a bond that will last forever.”
Kanika is a student of Journalism and Mass Communication and hopes to be a journalist one day. The pretty girl has also acted in a Telugu film, Tipu, whose makers spotted her pictures at a pageant and offered her the role after an audition. Kanika speaks of her future plans, “Maybe I will pursue acting but I will surely participate in more beauty contests. I am currently doing my final year of college so I want to concentrate and complete my studies for the time being.”
For the moment, Kanika is reveling in the recognition that is coming with her win. Her parents had flown down from Delhi to see her walk the ramp and she is trying to take in as much of Kerala she can manage in the two days she has. She is getting ready to travel to Alapuzha to cruise the backwaters on a houseboat to experience the local flavours. So what if Mollywood comes calling? She confidently answers, “Why not? It’s fun to learn new languages.”
