Red button initiative assures better traveller safety
On seeing a mishap or a crime, the public can press a red button inside the terminal
Kochi: The crime rate in the state has dropped by nearly 30 per cent in the last one year, an achievement mainly due to the implementation of modern technologies in crime prevention and detection, home minister Ramesh Chennithala said on Tuesday.
He was launching the ‘Spider Red Button’ programme at the Aluva private bus stand. Under the Red Button Public Robotic Spectrum (RBPRS) programme, intelligent robotic terminals will be installed at public places.
On seeing a mishap or a crime, the public can press a red button inside the terminal. An SOS alert will be automatically sent to the nearest police control room and the mobile police vehicle.
“This is the first of its kind initiative being launched across the country to alert cops at the minimum possible time on an untoward incident. The Red Button towers are being set up in the Ernakulam rural areas and if it is successful, the model will be replicated elsewhere in the state,” he said.
Each terminal is also fitted with four to five CCTV cameras which would capture the images (360 degree angle) and automatically send them to the police control room. A hotline telephone link will also automatically open up for the person who presses the red button if he/ she wants to talk to the police control centre to pass on any specific information.
The technology is provided free for the pilot project by The Red Button Company to enable the government to study the utility of the robotic terminals.
“Red Button is a great safety empowerment for women too. Any woman in crisis can press the red button without fear of disclosing their identity or telephone number,” the minister said.
