Kochi Metro work behind schedule
Of 16 stations only CU and Pathadipalam are nearing completion
Kochi: The Kochi metro civil works is now expected to be completed by Dece-mber, a good two months behind the earlier target. However, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) exuded confidence about completing the first reach till Maharajas ground by June next year.
Out of 16 stations, construction activities in only two stations — Cochin University and Pathadipalam — have reached the advanced stage of construction. “The entire civil works will be completed by December after which the signalling and track laying works will be taken up,” said sources.
Earlier this year, the DMRC had asked contractors like L&T and Soma Constructions to speed up the construction activities so as to finish them by October.
The former had even increased the workforce by 1,500 personnel and deployed more shutters and machinery.
It was on June 7, 2013 that the metro work began but the construction activities were slowed down by labour issues and land acquisition delay.
Though only a couple of plots remain to be acquired in the Aluva — MG Road stretch, the state government is yet to take over any land in the Vyttila — Petta stretch.
Meanwhile, the DMRC has removed barricades except at station construction sites along the Aluva-Edapally stretch, easing the acute traffic congestion.
“Traffic personnel should be deployed at the station construction sites where only one-way traffic is possible. Vehicles, especially speeding private buses, can be seen jumping lanes at places like Ambattukavu and enter the path of those coming from the opposite direction, posing a danger,” said Vinod Kumar N., a local resident.
