Jayalalithaa urges PM to settle NLC unrest
Pointing out that NLC is one of the main suppliers of power to Tamil Nadu supplying about 1,450 mega watts of power to the state
Chennai: A day after minor incidents of violence were reported from Neyveli in which the vehicles and properties of Neyveli Lignite Corporation Limited (NLC) were damaged, Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa on Monday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene.
In a letter to PM, Jayalalithaa demanded Modi to instruct the union coal ministry to settle the ongoing labour unrest at Neyveli Lignite Corporation “amicably” as any further strike by employees would affect power supply situation. “There has been no positive development with regard to finding a solution to the strike by the ministry of coal. I have been informed that currently the workers have resorted to picketing against officers and contract workers which would effectively stop mining of lignite and power generation,” she said.
Pointing out that NLC is one of the main suppliers of power to Tamil Nadu supplying about 1,450 mega watts of power to the state. She said the ongoing strike will affect power generation of total 2,990 MW of power in which TN alone will lose about 1,450 MW of power, the letter explained.
