Good news for Wayanad tourism as stadium lands international status
The charm of the stadium is that among high altitude stadiums in the country
KALPETTA: Wayanad’s tourism industry is jubilant over getting the reputation of a ‘destination of international status’ sans any cost, and almost by accident, because the Krishnagiri Cricket Stadium of the Kerala Cricket Association here, is fast turning into an much-sought cricket ground.
An increasing number of international matches hosted at the stadium suddenly has catapulted this tiny hamlet along the NH 212 connecting Kozhikode and Bengal-uru onto the world cricket map.
The charm of the stadium is that among high altitude stadiums in the country, it is second to Dharmashala in Himachal Pradesh.
Wayanad tourism organisation spokesperson K. Raveendran told DC that there were many youngsters who wanted to visit the stadium.
“Realising the selling point, we started asking tourists whether they wanted to visit the stadium. The location is superb and the spot also is logistically ideal. It is easily accessible from Kalpetta and Sulthan Bathery and close to major tourism spots like Edakkal Caves and easily accessible from the NH,” he added.
“We also received good coverage during the Ke-rala-Hyderabad match when the Starsports cameraman while focusing on a snake crossing the ground panned his camera towards the huge hoarding of WTO which read ‘Wayanad, jungle meets the country’”, said K.R. Vanch-eeswaran, office bearer of Wayanad tourism organisation, a platform of more than 50 tourism entrepreneurs.
“Many hotels and resorts, particularly those in Sulthan Bathery and Kalpetta have included the stadium in their itinerary and the recurring world matches would definitely increase its tourism value”, he added. It has already become a must see destination of school tour groups.
