Chennai: Chennai corporation engineers regularising and clearing encroachments along Marina on Monday night were harassed and humiliated by local vendors. According to corporation sources, an engineer who monitors waste management near Light House was threatened, verbally abused and his phone was snatched during an encroachment drive.
Conservancy workers rushed the abused engineer who started showing signs of high blood pressure and blood sugar to the Government General Hospital. Meanwhile a few workers associated with a private waste management group cleaning Marina also lodged a police complaint with Marina police station informing that women sweepers were harassed during their working hours. “Marina has been declared as a plastic free zone, but the vendors litter the beach with plastic while our supervisors instruct us to ensure that they do not do so. In this melee we are verbally abused,” said Shuba, a private sanitary worker, who lodged a police complaint..
Marina police said that they had received complaints from conservancy workers and vendors had also filed a counter complaint against city corporation staff. We are investigating, police said.
According to corporation sources, the top brass has recently instructed the field engineers to regularize shops in the sands of Marina and ensure that vendors do not pollute the beach. Meanwhile with the local heavyweights of political parties supporting the vendors, the engineers find it difficult to execute the clean Marina drive.
