Calicut University spends big on sports facilities
International pool to come up on campus
KOZHIKODE: Calicut University will soon get an international level swimming pool at its campus. The project coming under ‘Special Fund for Sports and Special Universities’ will be completed in two phases.
The first phase is expected to cost Rs 3.5 crore. The University Grants Commission has already sanctioned Rs 1.12 crore for the project. Rs 1 crore will be from the state plan fund.
The swimming pool will be 50 metres long and 15 metres wide. Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Calicut University physical education department director Dr V.P. Sakeer Hussain said that the first phase of construction would start soon after the tender process.
During the first phase, swimming pool, warm up pool and changing room will be constructed. Diving pool, gallery and other facilities will come up during the second phase.
The swimming pool will be named after Olympian long jumper Anju Bobby George who is a former student of the University.
At present the University has international-level swimming pools in its limits at Thrissur Sports Council and Vimala College.
“The new project would definitely be a boon for the athletes from the Malabar area,” said Dr V.P. Sakeer Hussain.
The University is also building a sports hostel which can accommodate 400 people. The facility will be used when the varsity hosts various sports meets and camps.
“The students of the physical education department can also use the facility which is being built using Rs 3.75 crore from the state plan fund,” said Dr Sakeer Hussain.
Though the University has a number of state of the art facilities, lack of maintenance is the main problem behind keeping the facilities in good condition.
The University is collecting over Rs 2.5 crore as sports fee from students, however less than Rs 50 lakh is being spent for sports activities whereas the rest is diverted to other projects which was objected to in the audit report twice.
