Storm over girls’ suicide at Narayana College

Angry parents, students attack Narayana College
ANANTAPUR: There was a outpouring of public anger in Kadapa over the suicides of two students — Nandini and Manisha — studying in junior Intermediate at Narayana College, who hanged themselves in their hostel room on Monday evening. Demanding a CBI probe, angry students and parents ransacked the college. Parents alleged that that the girls might have been killed or it might be a case of abetment to suicide due to which the college authorities had removed all evidence, including swapping of suicide notes.
The police lathi-charged the agitators who damaged computers, furniture and records.
Chavva Manisha, 16, and Malepati Nandini, 16, were close friends. They had joined the MPC group junior Intermediate at Narayana Junior College located on Pulivendula Road at C.K. Dinne in Kadapa.
Sources said that after classes on Monday, the two friends went to their room and did not return. Their classmates found them hanging from the ceiling fans and alerted the college management. The management apparently tried to cover up the issue, which came to light after 8.30 pm, allegedly because Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu was in Kadapa on Monday.
Student organisations and relatives of the two girls went on a rampage on Monday night, damaging computers and furniture. Manisha’s mother, said that her daughter had spoken to her over phone on Sunday evening, but had shown no signs of taking this extreme step.
“My daughter was not timid to commit suicide. The facts should come out,” said Mr Balakrishna Reddy.
Nandini’s cousin Bhavani, who studies in the same college, accused the management of not letting them inform the girls’ parents over phone. Instead, they cooked up a story that the girls had gone out. “I spoke to them thrice on Sunday and they had not gone out,” she said.
Kadapa SP Navin Gulati, meanwhile, said that it appeared to be a clear case of suicide as the duo might have been unable to cope with the academic pressure.
“We have a suicide note by Nandini. Two SDPOs are investigating and I am also dealing with the case,” he said.
Parents and relatives wanted a judicial and CBI probe into the incident. Protesters went berserk after rumours spread that a love affair was behind the suicides. Section 144 was imposed and additional forces posted at Narayana College and sensitive parts of Kadapa. YSRC chief Jagan Mohan Reddy has called for a Kadapa bandh on Wednesday.
Jagan says Narayana must resign:
Opposition leader Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy on Tuesday demanded action against municipal affairs minister P. Narayana for the suicide of students in his colleges. At least 11 students, have ended their lives Narayana colleges in the last 15 months after the TD was voted power. “No action was initiated against the colleges because Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has a partnership in the Narayana Educational Institutions,” the YSRC chief alleged.
He rushed to the RIMS hospital here and joined the protests of parents and relatives of the two students who ended their lives on Monday. He demanded that Mr Narayana should resign and he should be arrested for the deaths in the colleges. Reacting, TD leader C.M. Ramesh, a Rajya Sabha MP, accused the YSRC chief of dirty politics on even sensitive incidents for political mileage.
