I wish my dad had been alive to see Vikram acting: Prabhu

DC talks to him about his successful tryst with films
He was one of the most sought-after heroes in 80s and the early 90s, but talking to Prabhu is like catching up with a long lost friend. Looking relaxed in a crisp white cotton shirt, he relates how he found cinema the perfect platform. With films like Puli, Vijay 59 (tentative title) and a couple of Telugu and Malayalam films in his kitty, he is now trying to dabble in different genres of Tamil cinema.
“Till this day, I make sure, I bring a good name to my father’s legacy. But I am spending more time with my grandchildren, like how my dad did. I take them shopping. I drop them at school. Every Sunday is a get together for our family,” says Prabhu at the launch of an outlet of Kalyan Jewellers in the city, and reminisces how he never got to spend much time with his dad.
“He spent time only with Vikram, my son, and we used to hardly see each other, as he was one of the top actors those days. But after many years, he made it a point to make time to bond with the family and spend quality time. All of us look up to my dad as a role model. He might have left us, but the values he instilled in us are there with us even now,” smiles Prabhu.
Having been in the industry for more than a couple of decades, ask him why he hasn’t tried his hands at directing, he says it’s not his cup of tea. “I enjoy acting and I don’t hesitate to take up offers if they suit me,” Prabhu tells and adds, on a lighter note, that he doesn’t mind co-directing a film, if a close buddy like P Vasu is making one.
So, ask him if the audience will get to see him and his son together onscreen, he chuckles, “Vikram is one of the most happening heroes in Kollywood and I am so happy with the way he’s progressing. I have always wanted to see us together, but I am waiting for his nod of approval. Maybe, we both can act in a movie that is produced by our home production.” And does he have any regrets? “I have had everything in my life but I wish appa had been alive to see Vikram’s remarkable progress as an actor,” says Prabhu and signs off.
