Three youths drown in Hogenakkal in 3 days
Youths ventured into the gushing waters there and paid with their lives
Dharmapuri: In the last three days, the swirling Cauvery waters near the Hogenakkal waterfalls have claimed the lives of three youths. Despite a ban on entering Athimarathukadavu area near Hogenakkal, the youths ventured into the gushing waters there and paid with their lives.
As many as 10 tourists have died till August this year after entering prohibited places like Athimarathukadavu, Aalambadi and Maamarathukadavu and Manalthittu to take a bath. On Monday, police recovered the body of a 26-year-old boy from Puducherry, B. Surenderan, two days after he went missing in Cauvery.
His body was found on the Karnataka side close to Chengambadi village, 6 kilometres from Hogenakkal. Surenderan who had come from Puducherry to Hogenakkal went missing while taking bath in the prohibited Athimarathukadavu, along the course of the river Cauvery.
On Sunday, B.Sanjay, an ITI student from Bengaluru, came to Hogenakkal along with his family members. They went to a spot at Athimarathukadavu just below the closed hanging bridge. Warning signs in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and English clearly tell tourists not to enter the prohibited area.
Sanjay was washed away due to the force of the water and he could not be saved. “I was fishing at the place and saw the boy battling for his life. I moved the coracle towards him but he drowned before I could save him,” R. Sakthivel, 49, president for the Hogenakkal coracle operators association, said.
