The citizens of Vizag will soon get desalinated seawater to drink
Visakhapatnam: The citizens of Vizag will soon get desalinated seawater to drink. The desalination plant’s location has been finalised at Pudimadaka in the district and it will be the first such facility in the state. AP will be the second state after Tamil Naidu in south India to get such a desalination plant.
The state government has directed the civic body to make plans to build a plant that can generate 100 million litres of water per day.
As per the Vuda master plan, even with projected supply from Polavaram project, the city will have a shortfall for drinking water and industries by 614 MLD, and without Polavaram 1,424 million litres per day by 2020.
A senior official of the GVMC’s projects wing department, said, “We have recently called for tenders to appoint a consultant to prepare another Detailed Project Report for increased capacity. The plant in the previous, submitted by APITCO, had a capacity of 10 MLD, on a pilot basis. Around three agencies have evinced interest and we will finalise one among them shortly. The DPR should be ready within eight months from now.”
