Four youths denied bail in painter murder case
Seven persons John, M. Babu and Sridar, Ranjith, Vinod, Sura, E. Purshothaman and Sridar were arrested
Chennai: A Principal sessions court in Chennai has dismissed the bail petition of four youths who were arrested on a charge of murdering a 36-year old painter.
It was alleged that influenced by murder sequences in recent action Tamil films, the youth along with three others attacked the painter with iron rod and wooden logs at Thousand Lights on July 8.
City public prosecutor, M.L. Jegan said A. Sathya, 36 and Ganesan murdered his friend, Kothari in Jayalakshmi Nagar in 2008.
Sathya was sentenced to undergo five years of rigorous imprisonment. After his release, Sathya was working as painter. After his release, a group of youths from Jayalakshmi Nagar were abusing Sathya repeatedly. On July 8, at 9.45 pm, Sathya and his mother, A. Parvathi, 65, were standing near the house.
John Suganraj, 24, teased Sathya and abused him. Angered over this, Sathya retaliated and chased him away. Nearly 30 minutes later, John returned with six friends and entered into a verbal altercation with Sathya. In a fit of anger, they attacked Sathya with an iron rod on his head. They escaped later.
Sathya was rushed to Royapettah Government General hospital and later shifted to Rajiv Gandhi Government General hospital. Three days later, he died. On a complaint, Nungambakkam police registered a case for alleged offences, including murder.
Seven persons John, M. Babu and Sridar, Ranjith, Vinod, Sura, E. Purshothaman and Sridar were arrested. Four among them, John, Babu, Purshothaman and Sridar filed bail plea stating they were innocent.
Opposing the bail plea, Jegan submitted the case was in the initial stage. Earlier, the Madras High court had dismissed their bail plea. Concurring with this, Principal Sessions court judge, N. Authinathan, dismissed their bail petition.
