Adding to the mix
Mahesh is also gearing up for a special singer/songwriter set to perform at the NH7 Weekender in Bengaluru
These guys may be new on the scene, but there’s not a soul who can stop dancing to their rendition of Ray Charles’ I Got a Woman. Picking on different strings – everything from Americana and blues to acoustic and folk, city-based indie rock band, Mahesh and the Mix is making quite the waves across the city. And their young frontman, Mahesh Raghunandan is all set to share the NH7 Weekender music festival lineup with the likes of Mark Ronson and AR Rahman for the first time!
“Mahesh and the Mix is an honest attempt by five completely different, differently-abled, equally lost individuals to push themselves and bring out good music,” smiles the band’s 23-year-old bass guitarist, Ravi Nair about their band that consists of Mahesh Raghunandan, Anish Nadh, Ashwin Shekhar, Ravi Nair and Johanson Prabhu Kumar.
Having launched their rock outfit in January this year, they’ve already shared the stage with contemporary folk giants, The Raghu Dixit Project. “We put an intense amount of thought into making our music as emotionally valid and meaningful as possible. We also focus quite a lot on collaborating and supporting other musicians. This helps make the scene bigger and therefore helps us reach out to more people as well.” chips in Mahesh, their frontman.
With each member being like chalk and cheese – Ashwin’s obsession with news, Anish’s passion for poker, Ravi’s nurtured beard plantation and Mahesh’s “annoyingly, high OCD”, it’s not outlandish for the band to have different music influences, whilst still blending into one when it comes to their sound. Although legendary performers like Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles and Chet Baker feature on their list, they have their own to add to the mix as well. “I was exposed to music from a very young age thanks to my uncle TV Nagaraj Shastry, a music enthusiast who encouraged and inspired many in my family to learn and appreciate music,” says 25-year-old Ashwin, the band’s drummer.
Mahesh is also gearing up for a special singer/songwriter set to perform at the NH7 Weekender in Bengaluru. “I will be collaborating with cello player Grace Biswas doing most of my originals with a more personal and ‘intimate’ sound. It is definitely something not many have tried before here in India so I’m looking forward to it,” says the 23-year-old musician, who his band mates say, loves to get into people’s heads for inspired lyrics.
The band now plans on traversing the length and breadth of the country performing some of their more popular originals like Kill Me and their versions of pop songs and classics. Aside of that, they keep themselves entertained and occupied. “Ashwin can even snore in polyrhythms and the masterpiece is on our SoundCloud page,” quips guitarist Anish Nadh. The oldest and according to the band, the sanest of them all seems to be Johanson, their sound engineer who unwinds by lazing around with his cat, Xia.
