Tenant directory still in planning stage from 2 years
The directory would make it compulsory for every owner to disclose details of their tenants
Hyderabad: Any terror operative or major criminal can easily get accommodation in Hyderabad if he shells out enough money. Though the city police have asked landlords to inform them if they find their tenants suspicious, not many oblige since they get a huge amount of money.
Senior police officials admit that the city is so porous that several foreign criminals could take shelter in the city.
Before to the Dilsukhnagar blast and Karimnagar bank robbery, the militants could easily live in city for many months and move their explosives escaping glare of intelligence agencies.
The tenant directory planned by the police is still stuck in the planning stage even after two years. The Cyberabad police had aimed to build the directory using the possibilities of digital technology to keep track of the 70 lakh-odd inhabitants living under the commissionerate limits.
The directory would make it compulsory for every owner to disclose details of their tenants to the police. However, the project is yet to take off.
Meanwhile, police officials say still most owners do not even ask for any identity documents before renting out their flats to tenants. They do not inform the police if they find their tenants suspicious.
The police have in fact the power to book a case against house owners for not disclosing the suspicious activities of their tenants.
Top cops say that under IPC 202 (Intentional omission to give information of offence by person bound to inform) the owners can be punished.
“Under CrPc section 144, the owners are bound to inform the police about miscreants. They can also be a punished under IPC 188 for disobeying an order duly promulgated by public servant,” said Malkajgiri DCP Ms. Rama Rajeswari.
