Officials turn blind eye to damaged infrastructure
Kochi: It was after persistent demands for years that the railways set up passenger amenities like escalators and chairs at the North railway station two months ago. However, miscreants have already damaged some of the infrastructure and the railways are making no efforts to repair them.
“A look at the waiting chairs at Ernakulam Town station is enough to assess how the railways treat passengers. Within months of installing the steel chairs near the escalator at platform No 1, the bucket portion has gone missing and what remains can be be mistaken for some modern art in steel. There is no effort to repair them from the railway’s side,” said Mohan Mangattussery, a resident of South Chitoor and a regular commuter.
The commuters also point out that the railways are yet to fix the main problem — water leaking down from the roof on platform No 1 when it rains.
“We’ve experienced this issue for years. There is a gap between the main building and the unscientific roof work of platform No 1. The platform gets filled with water when it rains,” Mohan said.
When contacted, railway officials said they were aware of the problem and that action would be taken soon.
“A lot of people’s representatives use this station on a daily basis and still the problem is being ignored. The marble seats too are damaged in many places. This despite thousands of commuters using the station on a daily basis,” he said.
