Justice must reach the common man: Nandita Haksar
Hyderabad: Noted rights activist and Supreme Court lawyer Nandita Haksar said very little had been achieved in terms of reaching justice to the common man.
She said the importance of human rights lawyers is ever growing in the face of atrocities and oppression. Ms Haksar was honoured on Sunday by the Nalsar University of Law with a doctorate in law.
Ms Haksar is the daughter of former bureaucrat P.N. Haksar who was principal secretary to Indira Gandhi. She was also counsel for the Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.
In her acceptance spe-ech, Ms Haksar recalled her fight against the Armed Forces Special Powers Act and the oppression of the Naga people.
She recalled her meeting with a woman in the Northeast who said she was born in the open fields in front of soldiers. Ms Haksar said the the people of the Northeast had still not got justice.
She said very little had been achieved in terms of reaching justice to the common man and said the judicial system was inadequate.
In this context, Nandita Haksar emphasised that the role of the human rights lawyer is more important than ever.
