Gulf, Afghan students in UP to be under scanner for ‘ISIS-links’

New Delhi: Spreading a word of caution against the growing influence of ISIS in India, Meerut divisional commissioner Alok Sinha has asked authorities to be vary of Gulf and Afghan students studying in Ghaziabad, Noida and Meerut, as reports suggest that they might be in touch with the terrorist outfit.

According to a news report, the Divisional commissioner has asked the district magistrates and senior superintendents of police of the six districts under the division to keep these students, who study in professional courses under scanner, especially those who have become 'newly-rich', particularly those spending more than what their families earn.

Claiming that ISIS was recruiting educated young men through Internet, Sinha wrote in a letter to the DMs and SSPs of the concerned regions that this was possibly because of the religious frenzy in the rural areas. He also asked them to prepare a list of all cyber cafes in these districts and track suspicious people frequenting them.

Non-traditional resources like personnel from revenue, forest and health departments can be useful for collecting important information and tracking activities, he said and also sought that all tenants in these districts be verified.
