Rains spur viral fevers in Hyderabad
The rains and fluctuations in temperatures have made the viruses strong
Hyderabad: Cases of diarrhoea are on the rise in the city with around 25 cases per week being reported. The wet spell brought some relief but it also saw a rise in cases of diarrhea. The rains and fluctuations in temperatures have made the viruses strong.
Dr H. Gopi Kishan, a general physician at Apollo Hospitals explained, “Diarrhoea is caused by viral or bacterial infection and its main source is food and water. For this reason, those who go outdoors must carry their own water as we found that often water contamination is one of the main reasons for people to fall ill.”
Despite the availability of bottled water, many people opt for water in bakeries, cafes and hotels and this causes problems.
In many parts of the city, due to construction works, road works and digging for cables, main sewer pipes have broken.
In RR district at ECIL, Malkajgiri and R.K. Puram, complaints of sewage water entering water pipelines have been reported. Dr Srinivas Rao, a resident of R.K. Puram said, “Due to cable works, a main sewer line was damaged and water is flowing on the road. The authorities have failed to repair it. We can’t use the manjira water as it is smelling bad. Despite complaints, the municipal authorities have failed to repair this. They are fighting with the cable contractor and he has simply washed his hands off.”
