Panchayat chief attacked on Independence Day in Kancheepur
The two were later handed over to Kancheepuram taluk police station
Chennai: The Independence Day celebration venue at a school in Kancheepuram turned bloody when Vepedu panchayat chairman was hacked by a gang of three in full view of school children and parents who were all watching cultural programmes on Saturday morning.
The victim, Arul Nathan was watching the programme after hoisting the tricolour at St Anthony’s matriculation school when the assailants reached there after scaling over the backside wall of the school.
Police identified one of the attackers as K. Prem Kumar, son of Krishnan, who contested in the local body election in the year 2011 and lost. During the 2012 new-year celebration Santha Kumar, elder son of Krishnan, who objected to Arul Nathan and his associates cutting cake in the road after blocking traffic, was brutally attacked and died in hospital.
“Till then Krishnan’s family had been waiting for a chance to retaliate and eliminate Arul Nathan to avenge the death of Santha Kumar. They wanted to kill Arul Nathan in full view of the public and that is why Prem Kumar and his associates attacked him at the school venue,” the police said. But Arul Nathan on Saturday survived the attack and had been admitted to a private hospital in Chennai by his supporters.
Though immediately after the attack Prem Kumar and his friends managed to escape, people who had witnessed the attack chased him and caught him when he ran back to his house.
The people caught him and his father Krishnan. The two were later handed over to Kancheepuram taluk police station.
