Osmania General Hospital has external injuries
Experts say it needs repairs, flay TS’ twin tower plans
Hyderabad: Two separate reports released on Friday on the Osmania General Hosp-ital came to a conclusion that the building is structurally stable and requires just external repairs and renovation. One rep-ort was by INTACH and the other was by a voluntary committee of former government engineers and a senior architect.
The voluntary committee under the banner of Hyderabad Zindabad in its report condemned the plan of Telangana government to construct twin towers in place of the present OGH building after demolishing it. They argue that OGH, which is spread over 26.86 acres was originally built to serve just around five lakh patients and keeping in mind the present population of the city and its growing trend, different departments of OGH should be distributed over unused government lands in areas located in surroundings of the Osmania Medical College.
Giving example of AIIMS and Safdarjung hospital of Delhi which are spread over 800 and 560 acres respectively, they slammed the government’s plan to construct a hospital to serve lakhs of people in just over 26.86 acres, arguing that such a move would trigger traffic chaos around the hospital along with increasing pollution and making it tough for patients to reach in emergency situations.
Prof. Ramesh Reddy, retired principal of Osmania University engineering college and one of the committee members, said, “Super specialty hospitals dispersed across the city is a better idea. This was even followed decades ago when fever hospital, TB hospital, mental hospital and ENT hospital were established across the city even though Hyderabad was not as populated and widespread as now.”
The INTACH report said that the damages on in OGH are mainly due to leaking pipe leading to water seepage, corroding steel and minor cracks due to vegetation growth.
