Evidence points to cadet’s suicide: Kerala Police

Officials said they were not going into the procedural flaws that led to Dhanush’s death

KOZHIKODE: The investigation into the mysterious death of NCC cadet, Dhanush Krishna, at Army Barracks at West Hill is in the final stages. According to police sources, the circumstantial evidence point to suicide.

Statements from other cadets, Dhanush’s actions before his death and his moves that finally led to it points towards this.

The investigation team led by assistant commissioner Jo-ssey Cherian would visit the boy’s residence and native next week before finalising this aspect, sources said.

Co-cadets told police that Dhanush prayed before being taken to hospital and had told those around him that his mother should not be told about this and requested them to save him. He also said “sorry” to everyone.

The police’s conclusion is that the bullet, which had reportedly gone missing from Dhanush’s custody was the same bullet that killed him.

“As per records no other bullet was found missing. Evidence suggests that Dhanush loaded an empty gun and that could be the bullet that was missing. Our reading is Dhanush had kept the bullet but told officers that one was missing. He had left the firing range for lunch but returned within a few minutes without having lunch. That shows that he wanted to be alone,” a police investigation team member told DC.

Police investigators today checked his bags but could not retrieve anything that could substantiate that the boy was in distress. Police also checked his mobile phone records. “We hope to nail the reason in or two days. Now there is only a remote chance that the boy was killed in accidental firing,” the official added.

Officials said they were not going into the procedural flaws that led to Dhanush’s death. “The NCC investigation may be looking at it. As it is their internal matter, we are not probing into it. They are cooperating with the police inq-uiry and both teams together recreated the scene of the tragedy at the Barracks,” the official added.
