Ernakulam Rural cops go robotic

Red Button is a great safety empowerment for women too

KOCHI: In a first of its kind initiative, the Ernakulam Rural Police is setting up intelligent robotic terminals at public places so as to enable people to avail police help in minimum time by clicking a ‘Red Button’.

“Under the Red Button Public Robotic Spectrum (RBPRS) programme, when someone presses the Red Button, the intelligent Robotic Terminal will automatically send the SOS alert displaying the exact location where the Red Button was pressed to the Police Control Room and also to the nearest mobile police vehicle,” said Yatish Chandra G H, District Police Chief.

Each terminal is also fitted with four to five CCTV cameras which would capture images (360 degree angle) and automatically send them to the police control room.

A hotline telephone link will also automatically open up for the person who presses the red button if he/she wants to talk to the Police Control Centre to pass on any specific information.

“It is for the first time intelligent robotic terminals have been installed at public places for public safety and assistance. Upon finding the pilot project successful, it would be extended to other districts too. The first of the terminals will be set up at the bus stands in Aluva and Perumbavoor in the presence of Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala on August 18,” he said.

The technology has been provided free for the pilot project by The Red Button Company to enable the government to study the utility of robotic terminals.

“Red Button is a great safety empowerment for women too. Any lady or a girl in crisis can press the red button without fear of disclosing their identity or telephone number,” said Mohan P R, CEO, The Red Button Company.
