Lijo Paul credits the award to friendship

He is typically a shy person who likes to be in the background
Lijo Paul, the winner of the Best Editor category in this year’s Kerala State Film Awards, calls his experience at the sets of Om Shanti Oshana, which bagged him the award, a different experience that was moulded from a long standing friendship with the director and the crew.
“Jude was my senior in college. But though we had met each other back then, we didn’t know each other well. After that we met at the sets of Malarvadi where both of us worked as Vineethettan’s assistants and we made a pact to do a film together. So when Jude started the project, I became the editor.
“It was a team of friends. What was interesting about this project was that despite my being the editor, I was with the team right from the pre-production work. Since, it was Jude’s first project, he used to discuss with me the possibilities of how the story should progress right from the start,” says Lijo.
Lijo began his film career in 2009 by editing the promos of Aagathan, and he became an independent film editor only in 2011. “For some time after coming into the industry, I was an assistant. It was Akku Akbar who helped me launch independently for the first time through his movie Vellaripravinte Changathi.” He goes on to mention Lal Media’s ‘Sajan ettan’ and ‘Lal ettan’ besides of course his wife Sherin and son Ryan Ritchie as his supporters.
Unlike actors and directors who grab eyeballs all the time, editors are rarely seen in the limelight or recognised. Has the award put the spotlight on him? “Yes, I have been getting a lot of calls after the award, but I’m basically a shy person who prefers to hide from the limelight. I think almost all editors are that way,” says Lijo.
Referring to the upcoming projects, he adds, “My upcoming projects are Aakashavani and Urumbukal Urangarila. Aakashavani was not my project initially, but later on due to some changes, I became the editor. I have completed the edits already. Right now, I’m working on Urumbukal Urangarila.”
