Traffic reforms to handle gridlocks in Kozhikode

Change gets mixed reaction from public

KOZHIKODE: The traffic congestion in the city, which has been worsening day by day, is impeding the growth of the city considerably, according to sources. Hence in view of the controlling rush during the coming days, the traffic regulatory committee introduced traffic reforms from Thursday onwards. The mixed response from the public to the new traffic reform, mainly applied to long route buses.

The new traffic reforms have been applied for the buses coming from the Southern and Northern side to the city. While the bus employees from Palakkad, Thrissur and Guruvayur welcomed the new traffic reform, bus drivers in the Thalassery route opposed the traffic alteration.

Bus employees claim that with the new reform, they are not able to board passengers from some of the busy bus stops here.

According to traffic assistant commissioner Abdul Rasak, Private and KSRTC buses coming from Palakkad and Guruvayur side are diverted towards Thondayad bypass to Pantheer-ankavu and Ramanat-tukara bus stand. It was also considering the traffic congestion at Mini Bypass, Meenchanda and Areekod junction, the new reform was implemented, he said.

At the same time, these buses after reaching Raman-atukara bus stand will be diverted to Ramanatukara junction- Pantheerankavu via Thondayad bypass to reach the city.

The traffic AC has also recommended to bus employees that they allot stops for passengers at Pantheerankavu and Thondayad as long as the new reforms are followed.

Buses from Thalassery, Kannur and Kasargod have been instructed to ply via Mananchira square and enter Kannur road to Christian College.

Traffic officials have informed that this reform in Kannur road was mainly made to reduce the traffic problems towards Nadakkavu, Vandi-petta and Westhill side.
