Railway Police nab key accused in ganja haul case

KOCHI: The Railway Police in the Ernakulam South station has arrested a key person suspected to be involved in recovering nearly 22 kg ganja from the station premises on Thursday.

The arrested has been identified Giji 40 of Udayagiri Colony in Idukki district.

A police official said that the probe team tracked down the culprit based on the visuals retrieved from the CCTV cameras installed in the station.

“We have zeroed in on the culprit based on CCTV visuals and a team was dispatched to Idukki to apprehend the culprit. He has been arrested from early morning and brought Kochi”, he added. Giji was later remanded to judicial custody by a local court.

Railway police on Wednesday seized 22 kg ganja found abandoned platform No 1. According to officials Giji has sourced the contraband from Orissa and Andhra Pradesh for retailing in Kerala.

It is learned that the accused used to sell the stuff at '9,000 per kg for local suppliers. The probe team will question the accused about other persons involved in the smuggling syndicate.

The railway police has increased the vigil on information about spurt in ganja smuggling to the state ahead of the Onam festival season.

Apart from the 22 kg seized from South Railway station, the local police seized over 10 kg of ganja from Edappally on Wednesday. The police arrested two persons in connection with the incident.
