Operation Anantha on Onam deadline

CM assures allocation of funds for project

THIRUVANNATHAPURAM: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Thursday directed the district administration to complete the first phase of Operation Anantha before Onam.

During a high level meeting held at the secretariat here, the Chief Minister asked officials to carry out the remaining work on war footing and allayed fears regarding allocation of funds for the work.

The meeting was held following a request made by health minister V.S. Sivakumar at the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday. The meeting which urban affairs minister Manjalam-kuzhy Ali also attended, reviewed the entire body of work associated with Operation Anantha.

Mr Sivakumar asked officials to remove blocks from storm water drains and clear debris dumped on road sides to ensure smooth flow of traffic in project areas. It was decided that road tarring work at East Fort would begin before August 21.

Special importance will be given to work being carried out at Pazhavangadi, Attak-ulangara bypass road and Chalai to ensure completion before Onam. Officials were directed to complete the boxing of the culvert near Vanchiyoor court complex before September 15.

The meeting directed that all main and allied work associated with the operation had to be completed before September 30. The chief secretary was also directed to personally visit the sites to evaluate progress and ensure the work was completed in a time bound manner.

Chief Secretary Jiji Thomson has also been asked to submit a detailed review report before the Cabinet subcommittee constituted to supervise Operation Anantha.

In view of Onam, urban affairs minister Manjalamkuzhy Ali dir-ected officials to carry out road clearing work on a priority and ensure that there was no inconvenience to people during the festival period.

The meeting was attended by collector Biju Prabhakar, KSUDP Project director Girija, sub collector Dr Karthe-keyan, senior officials of various department and agencies engaged in operation Anantha.
