Karnataka: Farmers block highway, traffic piles up

They blocked the highway at Srirangpatna for one hour, at Maddur for two hours and near Malavalli for one hour

Mysuru: Hundreds of farmers of Mandya district blocked Mysuru-Bengaluru highway and Kanakpura road, disrupting traffic for nearly two hours on Thursday demanding that the government fix scientific price for sugarcane, clear their arrears and begin cane crushing at the earliest.

They blocked the highway at Srirangpatna for one hour, at Maddur for two hours and near Malavalli for one hour.

Farmers’ leader Puttannaiah said that the policies of the Centre and the State government were “anti-farmer”. Farmers’ leader Nanjunde Gowda led the protest. Mandya Deputy Commissioner Ajay Nagabhushan said that sugarcane crushing would begin in the district by August 17.

KSRTC cancelled its services between Mysuru and Bengaluru between 11 am and 1 pm. Passengers of at least 10 KSRTC buses faced hardship because of the road block, according to KSRTC rural DM Basavaraju.
