CHENNAI: A day after Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa kickstarted freebies distribution in her R.K. Nagar constituency here on Wednesday, it is raining freebies for residents. Corporation officials are now working overtime distributing free grinders, mixies, fans and bicycles in the constituency, which carries the tag of ‘neglected constituency.

“Three months ago, when AIADMK MLA P. Vettrivel represented the constituency, there were delays in distributing the freebies. As a result, the constituency had piled up electronic equipment for more than 10,000 beneficiaries. Adding to that, the by poll model code of conduct stalled  distribution. Now we are clearing the backlog en masse,” said corporation sources.

Meanwhile, an official press release said Jayalalithaa started freebie distribution at a function at the secretariat on Wednesday. As a token gesture, she gave away five bicycles to school students to mark distribution to 1,518 students. The present phase of freebie distribution will cover 24,942 households.

So far, 44,596 families in R.K. Nagar had been given mixies, grinders and table fans. Also, 7,106 school students had benefited by getting bicycles, the release said.
