DMDK leader Vijayakanth gunning for top seat
Vijayakanth hinted that he will go after the seat of power
Chennai: In a clear indication of just what the DMDK’s top brass expects out of next year’s Assembly polls, party founder Vijayakanth hinted that he will go after the seat of power while pouring cold water on any possible alliance. Vijayakanth along with party volunteers observed a day-long fast at the party headquarters at Koyambedu here demanding total prohibition.
He said the state lacked stability. “MGR was the last person to remain in power for nearly ten years. Since then, it has been five years for Jayalalithaa and five years for Kalaignar (Karunanidhi),” after every election. It has to change. I am not saying that you vote for me. But I am asking you to vote for a good person. Now, who is that good person is something you (people) have to decide,” he said.
Perhaps Vijayakanth’s wife and party women’s wing leader Premalatha was more vocal. “The countdown starts. Your reign is coming to an end.” “Whatever he (Vijayakanth) touched had given him only victory. In films, it was a massive success for him. As a politician, he became an MLA when he contested. Later, he became the Opposition leader. Next time, you know what it means,” she said amidst thunderous applause from the cadres.
Premalatha criticised the city police for arresting DMDK cadres last week, including Vijayakanth, herself and her brother L.K. Sudhish, for forming a human chain in support of total prohibition. The fast saw BJP state president Tamilisai Soundararajan, Puthiya Tamilagam leader K. Krishnasamy and Tamil film actor Karunas participate in it.
Referring to Tamilisai’s participation, Vijayakanth took a jab at the media criticising them for talking of poll alliances now itself when the Assembly elections are nearly 10 months away.
