Andhra Pradesh to seek local status for students

Sources said it can be done at the earliest if the Centre is willing to do it

Hyderabad: The AP government has decided to write to the Centre to provide local status in Andhra Pradesh to its students who enjoy it in Hyderabad.

Leaders of the various employees associations had told the state government that their children, who are studying in Hyderabad, would become non-locals in AP once they are shifted to Amaravati.

Ditto will be the case for employment also as their children will have to compete in open category for being treated as non-locals, union leaders told the government.

A senior official in the general administration department said the Presidential Order has to be amended to provide local status to the children of AP government employees who carry that tag with them in the joint capital of Hyderabad now.

Chief Secretary I.Y.R. Krishna Rao told this correspondent that they will write to the Centre seeking local status to be defined. Sources said it can be done at the earliest if the Centre is willing to do it.

A high-level committee comprising senior IAS officers from the departments of Law, Finance and General Administration and also leaders of employees unions is being constituted to work out the modalities and approach the Centre with the subject.
