Are you familiar with these beer types?

Read through and give yourself a point for every term you know

You may be fairly up-to-date with beer terminology and words like “milds, bitters, craft beer, stout and lagers” may roll off your tongue with ease. But just how good are you with offbeat beers like “saisons” and “sours”? Read through and give yourself a point for every term you know:

  • Saison — Belgian in origin, this artisanal beer is cloudy yellow in colour, and has a “zesty” flavour. It has also been described as having a “hoppy, spicy” complexity.
  • Wood-aged — Wooden casks were used to store and transport beer before the advent of steel containers, and a new generation of brewers are going back to the old ways as they’ve found that the wood adds tons of flavour to the beer, including hints of caramel and vanilla.
  • Sour beer — Tart and sour, just as the term suggests, these beers can be traced back to some of the oldest European-origin brews. Sour beers aren’t for everyone though, especially for beer novices.
  • The London murky — True to its name, this is a cloudy beer from London. The move towards opaque beers is quite a shift from the commonly held idea that beer has to be sparkling, clear.
  • India pale ale — Originally an English pale ale, the brew was thoroughly reinvented by American craft beer makers. This is a pretty strong beer too.
