Telangana government to inspect 10 top schools
As per a go, a school’s profit cannot exceed 5 per cent
Hyderabad: Yielding to demands for school fee regulation, the Telangana state government has formed a committee of officials to examine financial statements of private schools.
The committee will inspect the finances of 10 private schools in the first phase and submit a report by the month end.
The finances will be checked as per the GO MS 1, which mandates that profits of a school should not exceed 5 per cent. The committee will comprise two auditors, a regional joint director, an assistant director, and the district education officers of Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy districts, said deputy Chief Minister Kadiam Srihari on Wednesday.
As per the GO MS 1 issued by the then Andhra Pradesh government in 1994, schools can earn a maximum profit of 5 per cent. It had mandated that half the fees collected from students should be paid as salaries to teachers and had also set amounts to be spent on infrastructure development.
Senior officials said that the committee would investigate these aspects. The Delhi High Court had also set up a committee headed by Justice Anil Dev Singh, which had recommended refund of nearly Rs 250 crores to parents.
“We have selected about 10 private schools which are charging exorbitant fees. They will be issued notices and their financial statements will be examined against the GO MS 1. We wanted to do it earlier but were caught up with other issues like teachers’ transfers,” TS School Education commissioner T. Chiranjeevulu said.
