Simple Dasara will wreck our tourism, cries Mysuru

But by announcing that it will keep the Dasara celebrations simple, the government will only be turning away tourists

Mysuru: The plan of the state government to keep this year’s Dasara simple has left those who depend on tourism and make 20 percent of the whole year’s business during this part of the year, anxious.

“Whether it is simple or grand, the basic structure of Dasara will remain the same. The major attraction of the festivities, the elephants marching to the royal city of Mysuru, the Jumbo Savari, the cultural programmes in front of Mysuru Palace- will not change, said sources.

But by announcing that it will keep the Dasara celebrations simple, the government will only be turning away tourists from the city affecting 70 percent of people in Mysuru who depend on tourism. The revenue percolating down to people in surrounding villages of the district, neighbouring districts and states, will also fall, say Mysureans.

“With Dasara set to go simple, 25 percent to 50 percent of our business will drop,” say merchants at Devraja Market. “The number of programmes the demand for garlands, Mysuru peta and fruits to felicitate guests will come down drastically ,” says Nusrath Pasha, flower merchant at the market.
