Kancheepuram: Two fishermen injured in country bomb explosion

The two were planning to use the bombs on their rival group of fishermen from another hamlet
Chennai: Two fishermen were injured in an explosion when they were allegedly making country-bombs near their hamlet Nadukuppam in Kalpakkam in neighbouring Kancheepuram district on Wednesday. The two were planning to use the bombs on their rival group of fishermen from another hamlet.
Police said the injured two — Senthil Kumar, 31 and Venkatesh, 33 — were admitted to a private hospital in Kelambakkam after they were referred from Chengalpet medical college. “Venkatesh has serious injuries on his hand and face,” the police said.
Police noted that Senthil Kumar and his associates were having a running feud with a group of men from another fishing hamlet over a temple festival. Fishermen’s association had suggested a peace committee meeting on Wednesday evening between the two groups. But Senthil Kumar was allegedly not very keen in participating in it.
“It looks like they were planning for some misadventure to spoil the peace committee meet. The two had traveled to Puducherry to purchase ‘necessary items’ to make country-bombs. When they were rolling the jute thread, the bomb exploded injuring both, the police said.
Initially, while availing ‘108 ambulance’ they claimed that a floating item found in the sea exploded when they picked it up.
But when police conducted an enquiry, the duo confessed that they were trying to make country-bombs when the explosion took place. Following the incident more policemen were deployed by the Poovathur police station in the hamlets. The police are also trying to find out if the two injured had any other earlier experience in making bombs.
