The CPM hopes to embarrass the UDF by backing the employees of the corporation
KOLLAM: The CPM has extended its support to the graft-accused Kerala State Cashew Development Corporation chairman and INTUC leader R. Chandrasekharan, who has launched a hunger strike in front of the secretariat demanding the suspension of additional chief secretary K.M. Abraham.
The CPM hopes to embarrass the UDF by backing the employees of the corporation. It may be recalled that Mr Abraham had submitted a report in the Kerala High Court seeking action against Mr. Chandrasekharan and his relative K.A. Ratheesh, who is also the MD of the corporation, as they were found involved in corruption.
The director board of the corporation includes representatives from all the parties which remain silent to the serious allegations raised against the top men. “The INTUC leader is leading a moral war. He won’t be alone in his protest. The government should solve the issues of the employees before it gets insulted more,” CPM politburo member Pinarayi Vijayan said after visiting him in his canopy on Wednesday.
The government had pumped in Rs 255 crore to the company since 2005 when the current MD took charge. In the 36 years of its existence till then, the corporation had recorded a loss of Rs 488 crore. In the last 10 years, despite a financial aid of Rs 380 crore, it has made an estimated loss of over Rs. 800 crore. Mr Abraham filed an affidavit in the High Court demanding a CBI inquiry into the scam involving over Rs 500 crore in the purchase of raw cashewnuts from India and abroad. He even suggested that the Chief Minister had overlooked the demands for action against the tainted official.
