Hyderabad: Government schools in Telangana now have toilets but about a third of the newly constructed ones don’t have water. The government has also not taken a decision on the maintenance of these toilets. Deputy Chief Minister Kadiam Srihari said work was on to provide water connections to the toilets.
“We built these toilets within the deadline, taking it up as a campaign. About Rs 183 crore has been spent on the construction and repairs of the toilets in government schools. They are being supplied water from the Rural Water Supply scheme and allocations have already been made.”
He said more than 14,000 dysfunctional toilets had to be repaired under the Swachh Vidyalaya campaign. They had become dysfunctional due to lack of maintenance. Proposals have been submitted to the government to increase funding to the school management committees or outsource the maintenance work.
“On the maintenance issue, we are doing our exercise on whether to give it to the school or outside. We will take a decision soon,” Mr Srihari said. The deputy Chief Minister also announced that 102 girls’ hostels would be been opened and five model schools would also start functioning this year itself.300
